Mewstone 2016 Pinot Noir
Winery : Mewstone
96 POINTS : HUON HOOKE
'The only trouble I have is the need to restrain the beast'. That's Jonny Hughes discussing the ease with which his site produces rich, concentrated pinot noir. The vineyard is naturally low-yielding at around 2.7t/ha, producing little bunches of tiny, super intense berries. Twenty percent whole bunch stops the wine being just a 'fruit bomb' and gives it perfume, depth of flavour and a backbone. Deep purple magenta in colour, lots of blue fruits with chocolate and coffee. Only 177 cases produced.
Mewstone Wines is a venture between Jonny Hughes (ex Moorilla) and his brother Matt. The vineyard comprises 3ha at Flowerpot in Tasmania's D'Entrecasteaux Channel. It is named after the island of Mewstone, a small, rugged outcrop off Tasmania's south coast, not far from the Maatsuyker group.
