Principia 2016 Altior Pinot Noir
Winery : Principia
95 POINTS :JAMES HALLIDAY
Bright crimson in colour. Beautiful bright red fruit, spice and violet on the nose. The palate follows with a delightful mingle of those red fruit, exotic spice, a touch of forrest floor but wonderful tannin structure and harmonious finish. An extremely well made Pinot Noir.
Principia was estalished by winemaker Darrin Gaffy in 1995 at Red Hill in Victoria's Mornington region. The wine is grown, made and bottled on site. No irrigation is used, no pesticides are used, juice is extracted by a basket press, gravity controls all juice, must and wine transfers and indigenous yeasts are used for both primary and secondary ferments.
Pronounced prin-kip-eea (which is evidently how Caesar would have said it with a hard 'k'), the name comes from the word 'beginnings' in Latin. It is also the name of Sir Isaac Newton's famous scientific work which incorporated his theory of gravitation and the laws of motion.
